Cumbrian writer M.W. Craven has secured a spot on the longlist for the prestigious Theakston Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year 2025. His novel, “The Mercy Chair,” is one of 18 books selected for the esteemed UK and Ireland crime fiction award.
The longlist, which features a mix of established and emerging talent, was compiled by an academy consisting of journalists, critics, booksellers, bloggers, and industry professionals. Among those on the list, Craven stands alongside fellow former winners Chris Whitaker and Chris Brookmyre.

Anyone who enjoys gripping stories will find something special in this selection, which demonstrates the impressive diversity and depth of British crime fiction.”
The public can participate in the voting process until May 15, with the winner set to be revealed on July 17. Fans of the genre are encouraged to engage in this exciting opportunity to influence the outcome of the award.
