Suzanne Collins has unveiled a new addition to her Hunger Games universe with the release of Sunrise on the Reaping. The highly anticipated novel is now available for purchase on Amazon for $19.59.
This marks the fifth installment in Collins’ bestselling series, which has been adapted into a successful film franchise. Sunrise on the Reaping serves as a prequel to the original Hunger Games trilogy, taking place 40 years after the events of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. The novel follows in the footsteps of the 2023 film adaptation of Songbirds and Snakes, which grossed $337.4 million globally.
In a statement from her publisher, Scholastic, Collins explained her inspiration for the book: “With Sunrise on the Reaping, I was inspired by David Hume’s idea of implicit submission and, in his words, ‘the easiness with which the many are governed by the few.’ The story also lent itself to a deeper exploration of the use of propaganda and the power of those who control the narrative. The question ‘Real or not real?’ seems more pressing to me every day.”
Lionsgate has already begun developing a film adaptation of Sunrise on the Reaping, with plans for a November 2026 release. The Hunger Games franchise continues to be a massive success for the studio, with the original film series — which starred Jennifer Lawrence — grossing $3.3 billion worldwide and cementing its place as the 20th highest-grossing franchise of all time.
