York Public Library will host former Los Angeles homicide detective Rick Jackson on April 16 at 6:30 p.m. for the launch of his debut true crime novel, Black Tunnel White Magic: A Murder, a Detective’s Obsession, and ‘90s Los Angeles at the Brink. The event will take place in the library’s Upper Level.
Jackson, who spent 34 years with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), co-wrote the book with investigative journalist Matthew McGough. The memoir-style work offers a deep dive into a case that haunted Jackson throughout his career—a cold-case homicide he could never forget. Known for his expertise in solving cold cases, Jackson retired from the LAPD in 2013 and has since worked as a consultant and technical advisor for bestselling crime fiction author Michael Connelly. Jackson’s contributions to Connelly’s novels, as well as the Bosch TV series, have cemented his reputation in the world of crime fiction.
The book, which was quickly acquired by Little, Brown and Company, was released on March 4 to widespread critical acclaim. It was named Apple Books’ “Book of the Month” and claimed the top spot on Amazon’s “Murder/True Crime” audiobook chart the following day.
Black Tunnel White Magic recounts not only Jackson’s pursuit of justice but also features high-profile figures such as Marcia Clark, who initially prosecuted the case before taking on the O.J. Simpson trial, and Michael Connelly, who covered the case as a reporter for the Los Angeles Times. During the event, Jackson will discuss the case, reflect on his long-standing collaboration with Connelly, and share behind-the-scenes insights from his work on three true-crime podcasts and two crime documentaries.
Following the program, The Booktenders of York, Maine will sell copies of Black Tunnel White Magic, and Jackson will be available to sign books.
